March 2011

Dick's Folly needs your lolly.
Dick's Folly is the community narrowbnoat based at Hunton Bridge and run by the South West Herts Narrowboat Project [SWHNP]. In the autumn of 2009 it had to be taken out of service following a number of major problems. Here's the latest update of the fundraising activities by the crew and 'users' of the boat.

What a busy last few weeks we  have had.
February 6th saw the Dick's Folly crew serving tea and selling raffle tickets at the second of Tim and Lesley Brooks Abbots Langley Winter Acoustic Concerts [ALWAC] where 70 people responded to the promise of, and were enthralled by the vocal harmonies, tight scintillating, all women quartet, JigJaw, and who in the second half teased, taxed and tested the dancing skills of the audience who responded to their step and square dance calls.

Less than a week later, February 11th was Quiz Night at The Nap Community Centre in Kings Langley. The Dick's Folly crew could not have guessed that this fund-raising quiz would have added over 1,000 to their target 50,000 for the refit of the boat. The event was a sell out with 25 teams representing community groups and supporters who have used the boat over it's 20+ years history, all vying for the title 'Clever Dicks'. The teams were made up from many of the groups who have used Dick's Folly in the past, including Abbots Langley Winter Concerts, the Bell Ringers of St. Mary's Watford and St. James' Bushey, Guidepost Trust at Henry Smith House, The Kings Langley Health Walkers, the 1st Abbots Langley Scouts and the Book Trade Charity. The articles in this paper and the Watford Observer added a family celebrating a 60th birthday party and a couple of regular quizzers. The honours went to local Kings Langley team 'The Untouchables' who will be taking a trip out on a narrowboat as part of their prize. Project leader for the quiz, John Blake commented that following many compliments made about the atmosphere, quiz master style and food, a repeat event is currently being considered.

The Dick's Folly crew are standing by tea bags and towels ready as we sail towards the third and last in the season of ALWAC concerts on March 6th where folk duo Vicki Swan and Jonny Dyer will play a variety of instruments, including the Swedish Myckelharpa, Scottish smallpipes, guitar, flute and accordion. It starts at 3pm at the Abbots Langley Community Centre, Gallows Hill Lane, Abbots Langley, WD5 0OP. Contact Tim Brookes on 01923 264536 for tickets 8.

Watch out for details of the next quiz and diary dates for this summer carnivals where Little Dick's Folly will be on parade as the crew continue their quest to get Dick's Folly back in the water.

The sets of photos show the enthusiasm of our supporters at dancing to JigJaw at the ALWAC concert and The Quizzers attempting to be Clever Dicks as they ponder the answers.
