May 2011

Dick's Folly needs your lolly.
Dick's Folly is the community narrowbnoat based at Hunton Bridge and run by the South West Herts Narrowboat Project [SWHNP]. In the autumn of 2009 it had to be taken out of service following a number of major problems. Here's the latest update of the fundraising activities by the crew and 'users' of the boat.

Yes it was a postscript and you may not have taken it in, well the truth is we are all still trying to take it in. Yes we have been given the money to complete the refurbishment of Dick's Folly.  No, as yet,  we cannot elaborate on the details but will as soon as we can.  Yes our plan is to launch the boat back officially into service at the Rickmansworth Canal Festival 21st and 22nd May [].

Yes, we owe a massive thank you to the boatyard Starline who over the last year very generously stored Dick's Folly and undertook the work as and when our fundraising efforts were successful; who, in one phone call, moved from this casual idling position to full steam ahead, and with only two months to go, set out to complete the work in time for the Canal Festival.

No, it is not an easy job and you will understand why transport firms now brand themselves 'logistics' as James, one of our Trustees, became a master of the art!  This has required a crane lift from the yard onto a flat back lorry, the journey back to Hertfordshire, and a lift back at Croxley Marina, having moved a few boats around to create a space and then into the canal.

All will take place only a few days before the canal festival giving us just two days to put all our equipment back into new storage areas, familiarise ourselves with the new layout, test out the work on the engine. The time frame being so short we will not go up to our base but head off down the canal to Ricky.

Yes we still and always will have plenty of opportunities for volunteers, whether you fancy becoming crew or have skills that help keep the boat maintained and ready for the next booking, or enjoy fundraising and the all important backroom admin jobs. Our well established once a week gathering to clean and prepare the boat is also a chance to meet with other volunteers, and familiarise yourself with the range of tasks. Volunteers are rewarded with amongst other things the monthly BBQ .

Watch out for Little Dicks Folly as he joins in the Ricky Carnival at the start of Ricky Week on May 14th and plays his part in the re-launch the following weekend.

Thank you for all you support and good wishes over the last year and we look forward to having you aboard soon.

We will be taking bookings from 6th June. To make a booking, email

With All Good Wishes,
