Training.

Training for self-steer groups is essential. The Project's insurance requires an approved crewman to be in charge at all times whilst underway and negotiating locks.

The Project requires all groups to be accompanied by at least two crew qualified with either the National Community Boat Association's Certificate in Community Boat Management or the Royal Yacht Association's [RYA] Inland Waterways Helmsman Certificate. You will be asked to identify these individuals when booking and provide copies of their certificates. In addition, users who have not steered our boats before will be asked to attend a short familiarisation session. [Past users of the Project who would use steerers previously registered with us must comply with the current qualification requirements, effective from 1st January 2005.] The Project provides, through Canal Experience, the two-day RYA course at intervals throughout the season, and at the reduced cost of 140 if boat use is booked at the same time.

Training course enquiries and bookings: Peter Lincoln - tel: 07802 728291; email: training@swhertsnarrowboat.org.uk.

In order to provide this training we need more voluntary instructors. If you are already a qualified instructor or have some experience on canal boats and would like to train to become one of our instructors, we would particularly like to hear from you.
