SWHNT Training Centre

The Trust is a successful RYA recognised Training Centre with a great team of RYA Inland Waterway instructors. Pickles Folly, our 60ft cruiser stern narrowboat, is a great platform for teaching the Inland Waterways Helmsman and Crew qualifications on the Grand Union Canal.  The Trust's base is well situated, giving us the opportunity to offer students a wide range of inland waterway experiences as part of their training.  Alternatively, new for 2023, training can be done on your own narrowboat, as the Trust launches a great 'own-boat' tuition programme [see link below].
So if you are wanting to become a user of the Trust's boats with your community group or are looking for an RYA Inland Waterways public training course please see below.

RYA Inland Waterways Helmsman

The RYA has designed a 2 day course which will "give students confidence to helm a vessel safely on inland waterways". The first day is mainly instruction and the second is mainly practical when the students are given the opportunity to display their understanding and abilities. Topics covered include boat care and handling, lock operation, rope work, personal and boat safety and care of the environment.
The two day course costs £300 [or £150 if booked with boat hire].
We also run a one day refresher course and assessment for £200 [or £100 if booked with boat hire].

RYA Inland Waterways Crew
This course is ideal for introducing friends or family members to crewing a vessel on the inland waterways, and for giving them an understanding of how they can assist the helm. Our instructor will cover the basics of being a useful crew member, including personal safety, communication on board, throwing a mooring line, some basic boat handling, helping in locking operations, how to be a good look out, what to do in an emergency and looking after the environment.

This is a one day course, or two days if accompanying another course and costs £150 [or £80 if booked with boat hire].
