In May, the new training cabin was built, and the kitchen units were installed. Volunteer, Nigel, welcomed the milestone.
“In the past we have done the training in the boats or outside. Now, if it’s pouring with rain we can sit inside, make a cup of tea and chat with people. It’s a much more homely and professional environment,” he said.
Volunteers added more coats of paint to the toilet shed in what has proved to be a controversial colour – ‘Autumn gold.’
In the year to date, 12 people have completed their RYA Inland Waterways Helmsman course.
Following on from attending the Inland Waterways Association Cavalcade in April, volunteers took Pickle’s Folly to the Batchworth Boat Rally in May.
The South West Herts Narrowboat Trust would like to pay special tribute to valued volunteer, Cynthy, following a period of ill health. We wish her all the very best in her recovery.

Bird of the month: Canada goose
This month’s bird of the month is always dressed for a dinner party with its black neck and white cravat. You might hear its distinctive honk or see a flock forming the outline of a V on the horizon.
“Canadian geese tend to cover a wide area, but they have been around the base now for a few weeks now,” volunteer, Roger explained.
“A single goose has between 20,000 to 25,000 feathers which are replaced every year. The birds choose one mate for life, with adult birds waiting until they are at least two years old to seek out a partner.”
