RYA Own-boat Tuition

South West Herts Narrowboat Trust, in partnership with Lindsey Hood from Lindsey Boat Training, is now offering own-boat tuition on the Rivers Lee, Stort and Upper Thames, the Regents Canal, and the Grand Union Canal, with other inland waterways further afield by arrangement.

This is a great opportunity for you to earn your RYA Inland Waterways qualification on your own boat and gain further confidence and knowledge of how best to operate your boat. This is open to brand new boaters or those who have been on the water for a while.

As insurers are increasingly asking for boat handling qualifications, we see more and more boat owners earning the RYA Inland Waterways Helmsman Certificate as a way to demonstrate their boat handling skills.

Courses are run under the accreditation of the SWHNT RYA Recognised Training Centre, with Lindsey playing an active part in our instructor training and ongoing development programme. Training courses are designed around the needs of the client in line with the RYA syllabus.

The course includes:

• Boating safety
• Pre-start engine checks
• Ropework and knots
• Boat control
• Getting underway
• Slowing down, holding and stopping
• Mooring
• Turning
• Locks and using them safely
• Navigating bridges and tunnels
