In April, volunteers installed the plumbing in the new training room, ahead of the scheduled build in mid-May.

The toilet shed was painted and an additional coat of paint was added to the boat tillers. All the blinds were fitted to Pickle’s Folly and Dick’s Folly and the exteriors of both boats were washed down. A new sensor was fitted to the shower drain on Pickle’s Folly. All 11 inflatable life jackets were serviced.

Decked with new bunting, Pickle’s Folly made the journey to the Inland Waterways Association Cavalcade at the beginning of May.

Bird of the month: the Mallard duck

This month’s recipient may be seen by some to fly below the radar.

Volunteer, Roger, explained that while the Mallard duck is commonplace, the species has some outstanding attributes.

“Although somewhat overlooked the Mallard duck is still an incredible bird, reaching speeds of up to 70mph. Hopefully this pair [pictured above] will produce some chicks, although they tend not to survive very long on this stretch of the canal due to pike and heron taking them for food.”
